Recovered from Jet Lag (hopefully)

Well I'm back at campus with Jenny again this morning. We're going to get lunch here and then I'm going with her to her volunteer project in the townships. Yesterday I went into town with Jenny and he friend Amy. Amy's in the same program and we stopped by the place where she works. It's an AIDS/health clinic (it's called Walla Nani, which is the Xhosa word for embrace), but they also have a sort of small craft market for job creation. All of the money made actually goes to the people making the crafts (Dad, I got you some pamphlets, as they sell stuff online and I thought you'd be really interested). After that we went to Green Market Square, which is a rather large craft market. It was definitely an interesting experience. If you even glance at anything on one of the tables or make a half second eye contact you get a sales pitch. It's sort of overwhelming but you get used to it very quickly. For anythingyou want to buy they tell you it's about twice as much as it's worth (if you have an American accent) and then you have to haggle for the price. I picked a few interesting things, but I'm trying not to spend a bunch of money right away. We drove around the cape on the way home as driving through town during rush hour is insane. It was rather windy and the waves were at least 15 feet high and absolutely amazing. We got to see some of the really exclusive communities (Brad Pitt's new house) which are all really beautiful and right on the ocean. We went to a restaurant called the Fat Cactus, which is African style Mexican and was actualyl very good. The portion sizes here are actually normal and you don't feel like you're going to die from eating a giant plate of nachos. We also got some frozen yogurt at this really cool place near where Jenny lives on the way home. After that we pretty much just stayed in as it's not safe to be out at night without a car and Amy had to go home. Jenny and I got to watch Survivor though!!! It's a season behind here but I still got my fix. They actually have way more American TV here than in Canada. It was a big rain storm over night and is probably the most insane rain I have ever seen. It's pouring like crazy, but it's in every direction because of the wind. We went and did some groceries this morning as we're going to have a mini-party for my birthday tomorrow. We got some ostrich meat that we're going to bbq! We also got to take the mini-bus the other day, which is completely bizarre. It's basically just this large van/taxi that drives around with a guy yelling out the window for people to get on. Then you cram as many people as possible in and it makes different stops. It's really economical at like R3 (like 60 cents) and will take you to a lot of different areas. It is definitely bizarre though and I would have been scared out of my mind if I weren't with someone who knew what they were doing. That's pretty much it for now. Gonna go get some lunch. Mmmmmm....samosas.

Hey,
Glad you hear you're having sooo much fun!! Can't wait to see the pictures! Lola is doing fine - always asking me to pet her. Also, Tara managed to stop by AOII so that's all under control.
Say hi to Jenny for me!

Hey Cait!!!!HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got a phone card today and plan to call you but it's a toss WHEN.. Should I stay up til Midnight???
(Have to get up at 5!!!!)...or call at 5 and you will most likely be out....Call at 10 and wake you up????? AAAAAhhh... In case I miss you on all those times then I am hoping you read this on the 19th!!!! We just watched the finals for America's Top Model which was filmed mostly in South Africa!!!! They showed many views of CapeTown from the air to the beaches and Cable mountain....yes of course I got all choked...you know me... It was so weird to see it and know you are there. The aerial views probably were right where you are staying!!!! What are the plans for your birthday??? You've sure come a long way since 0330 May 19.1982!!!!! :)...I am sooo soooooooooo happy for you...
Hey....Annie met a real real nice guy!!! I met him and his Mom after work and it was great. They live in one of the old character homes on Kennedy Street. Beautiful steep front steps through a lovely garden and old wood in the house. PURPLE pillars on the front of the house. it reminded me of my childhood house!! His Mom's sister is a new RN at NRGH and someone was just talking to me about her today!! It was strange. Anyway.. we all hit it off and was quite fun..
BC news...Gordon Campbell won a frikking majority although the NDP roared back with I think 32 seats...Most of the Island went NDP. and....Belinda Stronach defected to the Liberals federally and was made minister of Human Resources!!!!...Big shock and she comes equipped with all the secret info on the proposed election for non-confidence happening tomorrow!!! Is all pretty bizarre...Anyway..Annie's waiting to go back online..big surprise??? We both wish you huge HAPPY BIRTHDAY and hope to connect with you...Loads of love...and hugs..Enjoy the day and CELEBRATE

Hey Cait..Just tried to call you but no answer..6:30pm your time Friday..Funny..It wasn't a ring but a loud buzz so I wasn't sure if it was working and then the prompt said noone was answering so I'll try again sometime..The card has 250 minutes and I find out it is only good for 30 days!!!!Guess my sister/brother will be hearing from me!
How did the birthday go?? I was on my break at work trying to imagine you eating ostrich burgers!!! It sure seemed strange to have talked to you through the time zones for your birthday..You actually spoke to ME on your birthday and I was the day before and now after.. You did say you were going to the Cape of Good Hope? Have you done that already? One of the women I work with has been where you are and it was quite amazing to hear her stories too....??? What time does it get dark there in the evening? Are you on daylight savings time?
We are headed into the long May weekend. I do a night shift tonight and then off until Tuesday...Hoping the rain eases up as things are getting lush and gorgeous but gardening has to start off with yet ANOTHER lawn mow when the sun comes out.. Huge thunderstorm last night in Vancouver but think we missed the noise here. Too bad.. Always enjoy a good lightening show. I managed to snag a month of work at TCU/Dufferin for someone who just went off on medical leave. Fulltime days/evenings..Yay. I will touch base with Trillium now to see about my orientation times since we are over the Norwalk lockdown at last.Malaspina is having a relapse and on lockdown AGAIN. With the new hours I won't be available until mid June now and I start my position there in early July which I don't think the director will be pleased about but got to do what I can do!!!!She hopefully can schedule me in...
We taped the shows you wanted and due to scheduling conflicts had to tape the OC on it too. Then 20 minutes before the end of ER the tape seemed to end. AAAAAGH A moment of fear for the wrath of Cait but it started up again and went to the end of the show without a problem...Better get and do some paperwork and calls.. Thinking of you.. Hope all is well.LOve always...Mom

Hey Caitlin! Glad to hear you're having such a great time.

Happy belated birthday, and hope it was fun.

James & I have moved to Hotel-de-Ville so we'll be nearly neighbours when you get back.

I'll be feeding Lola over the weekend, so I'll say 'hi' for you.

All the best,
James

Hi Cait...Waking up from the night shift..Annie made me awesome coffee so I am on the way back. I went to the gym right after work at 7a.m..That was a rush. There were a bunch of people already getting a jump on the day and I did a great workout..Yippee..Have tried to call you a bunch of times just to see if the card works but still get the buzz disconnect. We figure you are gone for a road trip and having a good time somewhere! See on world calendars that Victoria day isn't celebrated there..but it is cheese rolling wake day soon in England!!!!
Think we are headed to a movie tonight..Star Wars is sold out apparently so we'll have to see something else...Sending love...Hugs..Mom
